Maria Sorensen

Maria has been part of dance and drill team for over 30 years. Beginning with her high school experience where she was the Colonel of her dance team, Maria also studied flamenco dance in San Antonio, TX for eight years.

After graduating from high school Maria worked for American Drill Team School for 13 years as an instructor, camp director, choreographer, and adjudicator.

During this time she traveled throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, and Louisiana working with hundreds of public school dance teams and their directors in preparing them for their season of dance.

Maria worked with all levels of dancers and all types of directors which was a great training ground for starting her own business.

Earning her bachelors in Fine Arts from the University of North Texas graduating Cum Laude, Maria was also a member of the Meadows Education Teachers Program.

She was one of only 31 students accepted and earning Student Teacher of the Year from UNT in 1991.

Maria was a member of the University of North Texas Pom Squad, a Dallas Mavericks Dancer for two seasons, and a company member with the Anita Martinez Ballet Folklorico in Dallas, TX.

Maria is a certified teacher and has taught at Coppell Middle School West in the Dallas area and Westwood High School in Austin. The years Maria spent honing her skills in planning and management as a teacher and camp director led her to establish Star Dancers in 1998, a private junior dance team. She has been directing teams ever since. Her teams are award-winning and have received many accolades over the years.

As her program continued to grow and advance in all genres of dance, Star Dancers studio was relaunched and The Dance Academy was born. The strong reputation her teams have is an extension of Maria’s personal belief that we dance for a higher purpose and set a higher standard of excellence in all that we do.

Lauren Haggerty

Director of Ballet Academy North, Artistic Director for North Austin Ballet Theatre

Lauren Haggerty is a Texas native, born in Dallas and began dancing at age 3. After moving to Houston, she trained at Fort Bend Academy of Dance under Michael Banigan and Dianne Jarrell. She graduated from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) with dance honors where she studied ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, musical theater and dance composition among other special topics. Lauren attended the University of Oklahoma where she received a merit scholarship and trained under Mary Margaret Holt, Steve Brule, Donn Edwards and Jeremy Lindberg. Lauren also trained at summer intensives including Joffrey San Antonio, Joffrey Midwest and Craft of Choreography Conference where she attended on full scholarship. She was also accepted into other prestigious programs including Boston Ballet and The Rock School.

Lauren was a Principal Dancer and Rehearsal Director for BalletForte, a regional pre-professional ballet company in Sugar Land, TX. As a Principal Dancer for BalletForte, Lauren performed in many lead roles such as Giselle (Giselle), Kitri (Don Quixote), Odette (Swan Lake), Nikiya (La Bayadere), Sugar Plum Fairy (The Nutcracker), Les Sylphides and Paquita. She also performed in numerous, neoclassical original works choreographed by Michael Banigan including Summer Solstice, Concerto Grosso, Corelli, Bach Double, etc. As Rehearsal Director for BalletForte, Lauren taught company class, led rehearsals and set large corps pieces on the company. She assisted in planning and preparing for large productions including The Nutcracker, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, Giselle, etc. Lauren has been teaching ballet for the past 18 years and loves to share her passion for ballet with her students. She strives to create a positive and nurturing environment in the ballet studio while also preparing students for the demands of a college or professional career. She loves to help them discover their own voice and expression through the beauty of classical ballet technique and experience on the stage. Lauren’s goal is to help her students explore their own passion for ballet, while instilling the dedication and perseverance necessary to achieve excellence. Lauren obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from the University of Houston and worked professionally as a project manager for many years. In her spare time, Lauren likes to spend time with her family, husband Jake and two girls, Mila and Brooklyn, and compete in International Latin ballroom dance competitions.

Kim Cabe

Kim was born with the spirit of dance and the love of children. Teaching and working with children began in high school and grew to be her passion. She was a Lake Travis High School Cavalette dance team member and two year officer, ending her senior year as Captain.

During this time Kim choreographed solos and team routines, competed locally and nationally and was repeatedly recognized as an All-American Dancer. Kim continued in dance on a scholarship to Blinn College Treasures Dance Team; traveling and competing nationally. Her education continued at Texas State University in San Marcos where she obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Dance.

During her studies of dance she landed a teaching position at the Hermann and Sons School of Dance in New Braunfels, where she later became the studio’s director. Further training was obtained in assisting dance directors at Bailey Middle School in Austin & San Marcos High School teaching conventions and master classes.

In 2006, Kim was the Youth Director and Company Instructor for Heather O’Hara’s Company, where she later became the coordinator for Blast Dance Convention and Office Manager.

Three years laster in 2009, Kim opened her own business where she was able to share the love of dance with pre-school children all over Austin and surrounding areas. Her passion continued while working at Dance Institute where Kim later became Office Manager and Director of their Youth Program.

Since 2018, Kim has worked with The Dance Academy as an instructor for all ages and office administrator. Kim continues to call The Dance Academy her dance home and undoubtedly will be sharing her love of dance to many more in her years to come.

Sydney James

North Austin Dance Artists Company Assistant, Studio Instructor

Sydney Marsjahn, a Texas native, grew up training at the Dance Institute Performance Academy in Austin, Texas, where she gained much of her experience by attending conventions and dancing competitively at a national level for 10 years. Over the years, she has dedicated her training to developing her versatility, pursuing multiple styles of dance, and learning from top teachers and choreographers, such as DJ Smart, Brandon Perry Russel, Anthony Burrell, and more. In addition, Sydney attended intensives at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, Joffrey Ballet School, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. After graduating highschool, she went on to complete two years at Pace University in New York City as a commercial dance major. She later returned to Austin to further explore her love for choreography and teaching young dancers. Sydney is currently on faculty and operating as an Assistant Company director at The Dance Academy in Leander TX, as well as the Lab Ratz hip-hop company director at Body Lab in Spicewood, TX. While she has a passion for choreography and educating the next generation of dancers, Sydney is a multi-passionate, multi-faceted individual who aspires to merge the worlds of the arts in new, innovative ways. Today, Sydney continues to fuel her love for dance by performing, creating, and exploring different avenues of the arts.

Angelina Barba

Angelina Barba was born in Los Angeles, California and began her training in hip hop at the age of 8. She then soon moved to Austin, Texas to continue her training at local dance studios. She competed with 2 Hype hip hop company for 5 years, under the direction of Leslie Garcia. Angelina joined the Rouse Royals drill team in high school and served as a line officer her senior year. Along with her senior year of high school, she competed with eSTREET hip hop company, under the direction of Justin Streeter.

Angelina has received Grand National titles and many awards and scholarships throughout her competitive dance team years. She has continued her training at an industry level, along with receiving prestigious assistant and performance opportunities by her mentors.

Angelina’s found love for teaching has given her many opportunities as she now teaches at local studios and schools in the Austin area regularly. She has also held director positions of preprofessional hip hop companies such as eSTREET hip hop company and is currently the director and choreographer for REALM hip hop company at The Dance Academy in Leander, TX. Angelina wishes to continue her training and growth as both a student and a teacher. She is excited to continue to create choreography, teach and share her passion for dance!

Shanna Fragen is an Austin based dancer, teacher, and choreographer. She is originally from Chicago, IL and earned a BFA in Dance from Columbia College Chicago. Shanna has taught, choreographed, and directed at many studios in the Austin area, and has trained several students who have gone on to dance for acclaimed college dance programs and companies. Shanna’s choreography has been recognized and awarded in both competitive and professional communities. She has performed with local company, BLiPSWiTCH, and has been involved in many festivals and performances as both a dancer and a choreographer. She has attended a myriad of intensives and training programs, including two summers in Tel Aviv, Israel, at the Gaga/Dancers summer course with Batsheva Dance Company. Shanna is honored and excited for the opportunity to share her passion for dance with the students at The Dance Academy.

Kori Moore, a born and raised Texan, trained as a competitive dancer in the Dallas area. After much success in the dance competition world, she hopped onboard Royal Caribbean’s “Voyager of the Seas” where she danced professionally in full production shows and entertainment opportunities for guests. Once she was done cruising, Kori moved to the Austin area to pursue an education at Texas State University while also teaching and choreographing for multiple dance studios and school dance teams in the area. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, she continued her passion for teaching dance and to this day thrives as a teacher and award-winning choreographer in Austin, TX. In addition to her love for teaching, Kori is also a dedicated adjudicator for studio and school dance team competitions across the nation and recently has had the incredible opportunity to teach alongside some incredible artists for Elevation On Tour dance convention. Kori is thrilled to continue her lifelong devotion to dance and share her knowledge with each and every dancer that she has the opportunity to meet! We are thrilled to have Kori Moore leading our Tap Program. She is an exceptional teacher in the classroom and our kids love her!

Brendan Rodriguez is a dancer, choreographer and instructor from Austin, TX. Throughout high school he trained and performed with ZACH Theatre’s Elite Pre-Professional Company and Cedar Ridge HS Visual and Performing Arts Academy. After graduating he continued his training as a dance major at Sam Houston State University for 2 years working with various choreographers and performing in musical productions. He has worked in multiple studios and tumbling gyms specializing in circus arts and acrobatics while also performing in both the Austin and Houston areas. Brendan is excited to start his 5th year of teaching acrobatics and dance!

Courtney's love for dance was passed down from her Rockett Grandmother, who funded Courtney's dance classes around age 4. Courtney danced at Gould Academy of Dance Arts as her home studio for 14 years. She trained in ballet, jazz, hiphop, lyrical, pointe, and dabbled in tap. Her love for dance and children started around age 11. As an only child, Courtney loved the chaos of children and started assistant teaching at Gould until she took over the classes herself at age 14. Courtney was accepted into the VPAA, Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Larkin Highschool in 1999. She was one of only 8 dancers accepted from her district. Her high school experience was a blocked schedule, allowing Courtney to take classes from guest teachers throughout the year in school and focused on integrating performance art, she danced in several shows/events/activities each year. She also danced with many local artistry groups such as River North Dance, Gus Giodano, Hubbard Street, Tri-City dance theatre. She danced with DanceEscape for a season and often attended Dance for Life workshops across Chicagoland. She taught for a few local studios in Chicago, LA and finally the STEPS academy up until she moved to Texas in 2018. After a few years break from starting a family and surviving a pandemic, Courtney finally found her home studio here in Texas, tDA. :) She has been teaching at tDA since 2021.

Natalie Steck

Natalie Steck began her dance education at age 4 in her hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico at Alwin School of the Dance. Throughout her years of training, Natalie danced with the Performer’s Ballet and Jazz Company and completed her student certifications for Checchetti I- VI. She attended summer intensives with Ballet West and the Cecchetti Council of America. After graduating from high school Natalie attended Utah Valley University on a dance scholarship with a plan to obtain a Bachelors in Dance. Her plans soon changed after she suffered an injury that would no longer allow her to dance on pointe. In 2009 she graduated with a Bachelors in Public Health and went on to obtain a Masters in Public Health from the University of Utah. After graduation Natalie gravitated back to dance through teaching. She began teaching ballet in 2009 and it has been part of her life ever since. In 2013 she elevated her teaching by certifying in the American Ballet Theatre National Teaching Curriculum, Pre Primary-Level 3. Having grown up in a studio that valued strict ballet discipline and technique, her teaching is centered on those principles. Natalie believes all problems can be solved at a ballet barre and that music and movement are therapeutic! She is passionate about helping dancers see where they fit into the dance world and loves watching her students fulfill their full potential. She and her husband Greg live in Georgetown and are the proud parents of four girls.

Jun "Sunny" Shen began his formal dance training during high school, where he learned ballet, Chinese classical opera, and Chinese folk dance. He earned his bachelor's degree in dance at Beijing Capital Normal University in 2001, and worked with Beijing Dance LDTX as a full-time dancer and choreographer from 2005 to 2009. He has performed and choreographed many works at worldwide dance festivals including Beijing Dance Festival, Grand Performances (LA), Dance Salad Festival (Houston), Busan International Dance Festival (South Korea), Culture Scapes (Switzerland), Braunschweig Dance Festival (Germany). He has also collaborated with many artists and dance companies such as Willy Tsao, Janis Claxton, Charles O. Anderson, Hugo Dalton, Yago de Quay, Wang Jianwei, Sally Jacques, as well as Ziru Production, Alonzo-King Lines Ballet Training Program, Ellen Bartel Dance Collection, Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company, and Andrea Ariel Dance Theatre. Shen earned his MFA in 2016 at the University of Texas and formed his company Shen Jun Movement Effect. He is currently an assistant professor of dance at Austin Community College, and a principal dancer and choreographer for Blue Lapis Light. in 2018 Shen was awarded Best Dancer by the Austin Critics Table for his performance in Belonging, Part One. In 2019, Shen’s work Centrifugation was selected to perform at the American College Dance Association, South Central Regional conference.
